JOHOR BAHRU, April 18 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is awarding scholarships worth RM 12,000.00 per year to the new 150 students pursuing undergraduate studies beginning this September.

Vice Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Zaini Ujang said the scholarships will be given to the full time first year applicants for Bachelor Degree Programme at UTM for 2012/2013 academic session.

The scholarships are given to encourage excellent Matriculation, Malaysia Higher School Certificate (STPM) and Science Foundation graduates to pursue their studies in UTM with full financial support by UTM.

It will also given to Science Foundation graduates from Universiti Malaysia (UM) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) or equivalent with at least 3.75 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA).

Priority will be given to students who excelled in English, Mathematics, curriculum, and passed the selection interviews conducted, subject to the terms and conditions.

For a beginning, this scholarship has been awarded to 52 students for 2011/2012 academic sessions by the Malaysia Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

This scholarship was funded by the Endowment Fund launched by the Minister of Higher Education in 2010.Since its inception two years ago, UTM Endowment Fund has successfully raised up to RM 34 million from the contribution of staffs, alumni, public corporation, students, NGOs and honorarium from sales of books.

The recent contribution received was amounting to nearly RM423 thousand contributed by among which, the Gates Scholar Foundation of RM261,900, sales of the book “The New Academia” written by Dr Zaini of RM82,425, Harvard Business School (HBS) Alumni Club of Malaysia RM50,000, Mohd Haniffa Abdul Hamid RM12,000.00 and Association of UTM Retiree and Alumni Cooperative of RM3, 000 respectively.
