Prof Sharifah runner-up to the ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women

JOHOR BAHRU, 28 October  2016 – Professor Dr. Sharifah Rafidah Wan Alwi has been selected as the runner-up from among more than 60 ASEAN applicants for the 2016 ASEAN-U.S. Science Prize for Women and has received a USD $5,000 award.

She received the award during the 2016 ASEAN Ministerial Meeting held in Siem Reap, Cambodia, today.

Professor Dr. Sharifah Rafidah who was chosen based on her scientific research into CO2 emission reductions, energy efficiency,and biofuels production serves as a powerful example to ASEAN Member States as they pursue adequate, secure, and cost-effective energy supplies while minimizing environmental impact.

In addition, her support and mentoring of students, especially women scientists, is an exemplary model to encourage the next generation of researchers.

ASEAN continues to look for ways to increase the diversity of its energy supply and to reduce the environmental impact of energy use in the region.

The Science Prize recognizes her extraordinary contributions to increase the diversity of energy supply and to reduce the environmental impact of energy use in the ASEAN countries.

The award is sponsored by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the U.S. Mission to ASEAN and the U.S. Agency for International Development, in partnership with UL, to recognize promising, early-career women scientists in the ASEAN region.
