JOHOR BAHRU, 26th. February 2014 – Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering programme secured the top 150 spot in 2014 QS World University by Subject, published today.

UTM Vice Chancellor, Professor Ir Dr Wahid Omar said, the Electrical Engineering programme for the first time secured the top 150 spot and Computer Sciences and Information Systems is ranked in the top 200 spot also for the first time.

“The Chemical Engineering programme, meanwhile has remained in the top 150 ranking spot since last year.

“The UTM Civil and Structural Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programme also feature in the world’s elite top 150 institutions in five of the 30 subjects featured in the QS World University Ranking 2014 by subject,” he said.

Wahid cited, all five subjects received high scores from employers reputation surveys because they are satisfied with the performance and quality of graduates produced by UTM.

“We also improved in academic citation due to an increase in the number of postgraduate students who are contributing to the numbers of high impact publications.

“UTM improved subject ranking especially in engineering is reflective of our emphasis on quality of academic programmes, high number of postgraduate students and internationalization,” he said.

QS ranked the subject area based on academic and employers’ reputation surveys and the Scopus data for citations per faculty indicated in the global rankings. These have been combined to produce subject results.

UTM Faculty of Computing Dean, Professor Dr Mohd Aizaini Maarof said, strong engagement with industry in curriculum development and delivery contributes to the subject being featured in the 2014 QS World University Ranking.

The faculty also has very good collaboration with international institutions, industry, and local community, as well as implemention of the mentor-mentee system for research & publications at Research Group level.

“At research level, postgraduate students are monitored by Research Group and the faculty also conducts the annual research seminar as a platform to help monitor the students’ research progress,” he said.
