Congratulations to Tan Jun Jie (JJ) and friends for emerging as the 2nd runner-up in Youth Leadership Academy Malaysia 2020 with their social initiative, FutureLink. They brought back RM1,500 social project grants to expand their social business.

He is also proud to be shortlisted as the top 30 high performing Malaysia Undergraduates to join the program after going through 3 stages of the candidate screening process that included Essay Writing, Video Interview and  Case Study Interview by McKinsey & Co.

JJ is always motivated in society empowerment and has a strong determination to inspire and empower young individuals to create value in society. He believes in youth power and together with the alignment of his life goal which is to propel the nation through technology innovation, therefore he started the social initiative called FutureLink together with Zac Na, Jesper Huang, Dalvinder Singh and Ahna Alyani which were also the participants of the YLA 2020.

So, FutureLink is a student-run social enterprise, created in conjunction with the Youth Leadership Academy Malaysia, which strives to better prepare Malaysian university students, in non-tech fields, for a rapidly digitizing workforce. It is Malaysia’s first online platform that offers access to courses provided by leading technology companies, which focus on building technical skills around Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0) technologies.

Below is the highlights of the impact in their first interactive webinar on big data analytics.

Youth Leadership Academy Malaysia (YLA) is an initiative by McKinsey & Company that aims to provide a unique leadership development opportunity for high performing Malaysian undergraduates

The objectives are to enhance participants with personal leadership skills by tackling a social challenge within the community, equip them with structuring and problem solving skills to start a business idea and cultivate networking and mentoring relationships between the outspoken participants and the YLA peers, young professionals and senior leaders in the public, private and social sectors

This time, it was a 10-week programme that started on 3rd of October 2020 and there were 4 components in this programme.

  • Capability building workshops to gain skills and develop the mindset needed to deliver meaningful impact
  • Coaching and mentorship from industry mentors and McKinsey coach to enhance learning in addition to fieldwork
  • Fieldwork that practices new skills via social entrepreneurship project idea
  • Speaker sessions with the inspiring stories from young and established leaders

Their project was also coached by coaches from McKinsey & Company which were Najla Zamri and Crystal Koo, industry mentors Iqbal Ammer, CEO of The Livescape Group and Ida Thien, co-founder of Closing The Gap and lastly the YLA ambassador, Natalia Bong, a Senior Analyst in the Strategy and Planning Department in Lazada Malaysia.⁣ Their advice and suggestions were really insightful and had given a lot of input to improve their project sustainability and consequently contributed to their success.

Congratulations once again to JJ for the present success and may this lead him to unleash the best potential in creating more social impact.
